'Standing Waves' is a piece born from the authors intensive research into applications of radar and sonar systems for the design of musical instruments.

'Standing Waves' turns the performance space literally into the musical instrument, even not by tapping or playing any objects found in the space, but by directly exploiting the acoustical properties of the space. The space itself becomes the oscillator.

A multitude of large and very small loudspeaker systems are places on different locations throughout the space. An tunable ultrasonic soundsource (range 65 to 180kHz) with inputs for FM as well as AM modulation fills the space with ultrasound. At different spots ultrasound receivers with demodulation circuitry are setup. A few resonating systems consisting of very long springs (10meters) glued at each end to a loudspeaker cone (one serving as receiver, one as emitter) are adjusted via an amplifier volume control, to be just below the point of positive feedback. These resonating systems happen to be triggered whenever the setup for the piece generates frequencies that catch some resonance frequency in the springs.

The outputs of the ultrasound receivers are split: one part goes -without much further processing nor filtering- straight into the multichannel mixer, serving here mainly as spacialisation tool. The other part goes to a second mixer whose outputs become the modulation source for the ultrasonic emitter.

The piece -which is inherently real time- comes to life as soon as the performer switches on the equipment and starts slightly moving the ultrasound source, thus slowly scanning nodal points of the soundwaves as they are present in the space. As this causes modulation of the soundsource, this will at the same time cause room-acoustics dependent positive feedback to build up. Moreover, the feedback characteristics of the so created standing waces, can be 'played' by moving in the space. This effect is a result of the doppler shift caused by movement of bodies in an ultrasonic soundfield.

A later immediate result of the experiments performed in this composition, was the music theatre performance as well as the hardware developed for 'Holosound'.

The piece as it can be heard on the present recording, is the 1985 mixdown of the (analog) multichannel recording realized by the author in the small concertstudio of the Logos Foundation in 1979.

STANDING WAVES 1979 Godfried-Willem Raes
